Ethan is pretty bland all things considered and that goes for all his allies and enemies throughout the game. There also isn’t a lot of character here either. They aren’t going to bring him in on circumstantial evidence….unless he is stupid enough to flee the scene and give investigators a reason to believe that he is guilty….and no one in the game encourages him to turn himself in….these are supposed to agents of the Federal Bearu for Investigation. If anything they would have kept Ethan in holding until they found his gun. I get it, ballistics would trace the gun back to Ethan but unless you have the gun, you can’t confirm that and if you had the gun, you would have to have it dusted for fingerprints too and would find another set on there that didn’t belong to Ethan. If you couldn’t guess by my wording during plot synopsis, I find the events that lead to Ethan going on the run to be a little foolish. It’s a tense set up but I don’t think the execution is handled all that well. To be honest, I don’t think this is a bad set up for a horror game. Left with no other option, Ethan is forced to go on the run and track down the Matchmaker so he can prove his innocence. To make matters worse, an old friend of Ethan’s stupidly drags him away from the crime scene which leads the FBI to believe that Ethan killed his coworkers. He and two other officers give chase and things take a dark turn when the Matchmaker gets the drop on Ethan and proceeds to use his gun to kill his colleagues. As Ethan goes to work, he discovers that the Matchmaker is still on the scene.

In Condemned: Criminal Origins, you take the role of Ethan Thomas, an FBI CSI who is brought to the scene of the latest murder of a serial killer known as The Match Maker. Regardless, the game was a commercial success and is considered a classic in the genre.

Some people thought it was a brilliant take on the horror genre, which at the time was on the decline while others simply couldn’t ignore the many issues the game had. That game would become known as Condemned: Criminal Origins which was meant with a very mixed reaction. In 2005, the team decided to actually try their hand at a legit horror game. Both Blood and F.E.A.R are more about combat, not necessarily horror. It’s clear that the guys at Monolith have a love for horror but most of their horror themed games are just that: themed. Yeah they had a handful of missteps such as Blood 2 and No One Lives Forever 2….you know it just occurred to me these guys suck a sequels….most of their work can be considered successful.

They would then continue their work with the anime mech themed Shogo, the spy movie parody No One Lives Forever and the John Wu horror masterpiece, F.E.A.R. They got their start at the dawn of the FPS genre with Blood, a horror themed FPS that milked the Build Engine for all it was worth. Monolith Productions are some of the top veterans in the gaming industry.
